Non-Surgical Hernia Treatment

Non- surgical lumbar hernia treatment relieves pain, relieves the patient, and improves the comfort of daily life in cases of lumbar hernia that are not very advanced.

Lumbar hernia is one of the common back problems that causes pain in the waist, hips, legs and feet and negatively affects the daily life comfort of people. Due to the sedentary lifestyle, sitting in front of the computer for long periods of time, and increasing obesity, herniated disc is shown among the diseases of our age.

Within the scope of physical therapy and rehabilitation practices, avoiding surgery as much as possible in hernia cases is the general approach valid in the treatment of lumbar hernia. Physical therapy is also applied as a preventive treatment to protect the spine health and to prevent the formation of herniated disc.

What is a herniated disc?

Lumbar Disc Hernia, with its medical name, is a nerve compression condition that occurs due to slipped disc in the vertebrae in the lumbar region. These discs between the individual vertebrae, which give the spine its mobility, also soften the impact caused by the movement, preventing the vertebrae from rubbing against each other.

The lumbar region is the body's center of gravity. Since it allows us to perform large maneuvers such as sitting, standing, and walking, the damage caused by use mostly occurs in the lumbar spine.

Nerve compression, which occurs due to the deformity of the disc located between the vertebrae in the lumbar region due to many reasons such as aging, trauma and accidents, wrong movement, and heavy lifting, causes severe pain in the waist, hips, legs and feet.

How Does a Hernia Occur?

Fluids that begin to decrease in all soft tissues due to aging cause the tissues to shrink in volume. While the discs between the vertebrae are already weakened due to moisture and volume loss, when an adverse physical movement, trauma such as falling or an accident, and uncontrolled heavy lifting are added, the development of a hernia ceases to be such a difficult thing.

The texturally weakened disc slides, ruptures or overflows between the vertebrae due to trauma or misuse. This deformation disrupts the communication of nerves and causes hernia to form.

What are the Symptoms of Lumbar Hernia?

Not every low back pain is a symptom of a herniated disc, and it is also possible to come across hernia cases without low back pain complaints. Pain in lumbar hernia manifests itself in the form of severe pain in the lower back, unilateral or both legs, hips and feet from time to time. Low back pain and low back stiffness are common symptoms.

When the hernia in the lumbar spine starts to press on the nerve, you may have complaints such as numbness, tingling, burning or cold sensation in the legs. If you have one or more of the following, you should see a doctor if you suspect a herniated disc:

  • Pain in legs, hips and feet.

  • Numbness, tingling in legs and feet.

  • Pain in the lower back or legs when sitting or standing.

  • Urinary incontinence or difficulty urinating.

  • Unbalanced gait, loss of balance in the legs.

  • Weakness in leg muscles.

Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in Lumbar Hernia

With physical therapy and rehabilitation applications, we can heal hernia cases without the need for surgery. The cause of the pain is usually muscle spasm due to herniated disc, and it is possible to resolve muscle spasms, dissipate inflammation in the muscle and eliminate pain with physical therapy.

  • Hot-cold applications

  • Various forms of electric currents

  • Laser

  • ultrasound

  • magnetic field therapy

The devices and techniques mentioned above are physical therapy applications with different effects and benefits that we use within the scope of physical therapy and rehabilitation protocol.

Treatment Methods in Lumbar Hernia

Injection methods such as dry needle applications, prolotherapy, spinal injections and chiropractic applications are other treatment methods we use within the scope of non-surgical hernia treatments.

Dry Needling: Dry needle method, also known as intramuscular stimulation (IMS), is a type of acupuncture application. It is used to reduce muscle spasm. It is a painless procedure and no medication is used. After the needles of varying lengths according to the muscle group are inserted into the muscle, the needles are moved to relax the muscle.

Prolotherapy: It is an injection application that we use to renew tissues. The solution used in prolotherapy treatment, which we mostly apply for joint problems, initiates a self-healing process in the joints, cartilage, connective tissue and muscles by creating controlled irritation.

Chiropractic Methods: Chiro means hand in Latin. Chiropractic is used in the sense of manual treatment and is one of the oldest lumbar hernia and spinal disorders treatment methods. The mobility of the spine is quickly regained by the application of chiropractic.

PRP: In the treatment of platelet rich plasma (PRP), the plasma separated from the person's own blood is injected into the muscle group with spasm. PRP is a mesotherapy application that is used in many different areas within the scope of minimal treatments, with very successful results and activates a natural healing process. Its use in the treatment of lumbar hernia is limited.

Spinal Injection: In cases of low back and neck hernia, it is possible to relieve the nerve trapped in the vertebra and relieve the pain, thanks to the injection made from the tissue between the vertebrae. At the same time, spinal injection, which allows the hernia to shrink in volume, is an alternative method used in the treatment of lumbar hernia.

When is Surgery Necessary in Lumbar Hernia?

Conditions such as urinary incontinence and loss of sensation in the leg are important symptoms that cause us to consider surgical operation in herniated disc.

In cases where physical therapy and rehabilitation applications do not work, and the patient's quality of life is disturbed, if the pain cannot be relieved in any other way, surgical intervention has become inevitable in hernia.
